Nifty below 3100; realty, metal, oil, telecom stks plunge

The benchmark indices continue to trade under pressure. Huge selling is seen in metal, realty, oil, telecom, banking and auto stocks. This fall is in line with weak global cues. The profit booking is also seen in the midcap and small cap stocks.

The Sensex crashed 434 points to 10,249 and the Nifty lost 151 points to 3,083, at 2:38 pm. BSE Midcap fell over 2% and Small Cap index lost 1.8%.

Among the frontliners, Tata Steel, Sterlite Industries, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communication, ICICI Bank, HCL Tech, Idea Cellular, Ambuja Cements, BPCL and Unitech fell 7-11%.

However, ITC, Hindustan Unilever and Sun Pharma are top gainers.

The market breadth is under pressure; about 972 shares have advanced while 1985 shares have declined. Nearly 233 shares are unchanged.
